How to Find Out Your Oven Wattage
There’s 3 ways you can work out the wattage of an oven.
- Check Product Specification
The quickest way is to look at the oven’s specification. The watts (W) is usually written on a sticker on the base of the appliance. If not, you can check the user manual or the manufacturer’s website for technical details. This will state the power rating and average energy use for an hour.
- Use a Wattmeter
A wattmeter is brilliant for getting a live wattage reading and tracking total energy usage of any appliance. You can simply plug it into your oven to get instant information. This might not be possible if the appliance is hardwired rather than a plug socket.
I tested my oven which gave a live reading of 2927W while heating up and 1131W when upto heat. You can also keep the wattmeter running for longer to get an average continual running watts and electricity consumption.

How Much Electricity Does An Oven Use?
You can’t just use the maximum wattage rating of an oven to work out how much electricity it uses overall. It consumes different amounts of power based on the function. For example, it will draw high power during heating up and then be idle when up to temperature.
If you are able to attach a wattmeter you can record the kWh usage and average running watts over the course of time for accurate information.
Plus, manufacturers list the energy consumption per hour when in use. You should see a number marked in kWh. Often this is around 0.8kWh when in use. This is the amount of electricity used for 1 hour of operation. 0.8kWh is the equivalent of 800Wh. So the average running wattage of an oven is 800W.
If you use your oven for 1 hour every day you would use 0.8kWh electricity a day. That’s 24kWh a month and 288kWh a year.
That’s a rough electricity cost of $0.12 a day or $43 a year to cook your food.
Using An Oven Off-Grid
If you’re planning to use your oven in an off-grid situation like a power outage, RV, boat, or similar, the information above is important. It enables you to pick the correct power products and know how long you can run them for.
As we have seen these are very power hungry appliances so you might first consider using a toaster oven or microwave to reduce demands.
You can either use a power inverter, portable power station, or generator to produce electricity.
To make sure everything runs smoothly you should check two things on this equipment – wattage capacity and total energy capacity.
