How Many Watts Does a Coffee Grinder Use? (Coffee Grinder Wattage Test)

Cornwall Solar Company

On this page, you will find out how many watts a coffee grinder draws.

For a great cup of coffee, freshly ground beans are an absolute must. You just can’t beat it. These days you can pick up a personal coffee grinder for less than $30 to use at home. They’re compact devices you can use every morning for just a few seconds. In addition, many people use one in their RV, truck, or boat via an off-grid power source. Knowing the power consumption and energy usage is helpful to ensure you can efficiently run your appliance.

Below we will discuss and test coffee grinder wattage, explain how to work it out for yourself, and calculate the total electricity required.

How Many Watts is a Coffee Grinder?

The average coffee grinder uses between 100 to 250 watts.

The exact number depends on the size and model of your coffee grinder. For example, a miniature personal version draws 120W, while a larger domestic device runs at 200W or more.

There is a slight difference in power consumption between machines. On the whole, they are lower-powered electronics which use a small motor to spin a metal blade. As with most appliances, the bigger they get the more powerful they become. So if you have a commercial coffee grinder expect it to hit the top end of the scale.

How to Find Out Your Coffee Grinder Wattage

There’s 3 ways you can work out the wattage of a coffee grinder.

  1. Check Product Specification

The quickest way is to look at the coffee grinder’s specifications. The watts (W) is usually written on a sticker on the base of the appliance. If not, you can check the user manual or the manufacturer’s website for technical details.

  1. Use a Wattmeter

A wattmeter is brilliant for getting a live wattage reading and tracking total energy usage of any appliance. You can simply plug it into your coffee grinder to get instant information.

I used one to test my coffee grinder which gave a live reading of 134.2W.

  1. Wattage Formula or Calculator

If you know the amperage and voltage of your coffee grinder you can use this to find the running watts. Simply use the formula Amps x Volts = Watts. Or you can head over to the ‘Watt Calculator’ to work this out.

Coffee Grinder Wattage Examples

Let’s take a look at specific examples of how many watts a coffee grinder draws. Below is a collection of modern coffee grinders with their listed power ratings.

coffee grinder ModelPower Rating (Watts)
SHARDOR Coffee Grinder200
KitchenAid Blade160
Gevi Grinder150
SHARDOR Conical Burr200
Adexa Professional180
De’Longhi KG79110
SAGE Dose Control Pro130
KitchenAid ARTISAN150
Caterlite Spice and Coffee Grinder220
Cuisinart Burr Mill125

As you can see, the power ratings vary between different coffee grinders. So you should take the time to check your own appliance.

How Much Electricity Does a Coffee Grinder Use?

You can use coffee grinder wattage to work out how much electricity it uses. Plus this can be useful in understanding how much it costs to run your coffee grinder.

A watt (W) is a measurement of power at a single point in time. A watt-hour is the total amount of electricity used in an hour. For example, a coffee grinder drawing 150W would use 150Wh when running for an hour.

Happily, electricity bills are recorded in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A kilowatt is simply 1000 watts. So a 150W coffee grinder running for 1 hour uses 0.15kWh.

In reality, you use a personal coffee grinder for 5 minutes a week. (A coffee shop would run a lot more like 10 minutes a day). This means a coffee grinder uses about 12.5Wh or 0.0125kWh electricity a week. That’s 0.5kWh a month and 0.675kWh a year.

That’s an electricity cost of around $0.65 a year to grind your coffee beans at home.

Using a Coffee Grinder Off-Grid

If you’re planning to use your coffee grinder in an off-grid situation like an RV, boat, truck or campervan, the information above is important. It enables you to pick the correct power products and know how long everything will run

You can either use a power inverter, portable power station, or generator to produce AC electricity.

To make sure everything runs smoothly you should check two things on this equipment – wattage capacity and total energy capacity.

Your power source, like an inverter, should have a wattage capacity of at least 20% more than your coffee grinder. This ensures it will be able to deliver enough power as they are never 100% efficient. To grind coffee beans, you will need at least 200W of power capacity for most small appliances.

Secondly, you need to ensure your energy source, like a battery, has enough energy to run the coffee grinder for the required amount of time. The good news is that you’ll run the grinder for just a few seconds each time.  As we already know, it will use upto 12.5Wh electricity in a week. This is the equivalent to 1Ah on a 12V battery.

How Many Watts Does a Coffee Grinder Use Summary

I hope you now understand how many watts a coffee grinder uses.

If you’re using this equipment for personal use it consumes very little power and minimal energy. You will have to use an inverter or portable power bank to grind your beans in just a few seconds. Plus, the electricity cost is almost irrelevant. This is great news if you want fresh ground coffee every day!
